There's almost no better representation of quirky 60's guitars than this oh-so-cool Hofner Model 173. Yep, the body is indeed wrapped in a textured white vinyl tolex similar to what you find on an amp. Suuuuper cool. The vibrato is very surfy, similar to what you'd find on a Fender Jazzmaster or Jaguar so you can get things very dreamy and spacey. Surfy is also a pretty good description of the the pickups. They may look like mini-buckers but they're very much single coils in character. They sound killer both clean and when you've got your amp on "10." Instant garage-rock satisfaction. It's got a funky selector switch that slides in a circle, cycling between the neck pickup, middle pickup, neck pickup, or all three at the same time. The first knob is master volume, then each pickup has its own tone control. A lot of 60s guitars have skinny necks but this one is more on the medium-chunky side. It's a nice piece of wood to hold on to.
