Master violin maker Karl Höfner founded his own stringed and fretted instrument company in Schönbach, Germany in 1887. With a reputation for quality, craftsmanship and innovation. Sons Josef and Walter joined their father's company in 1919 and 1921 respectively. Hofner was know for acoustic guitars In a market dominated by inexpensive student guitars

In 1955 Walter Höfner, a creative businessman as well as a violin and guitar maker, invented an electrically amplified semi-acoustic bass. The distinctive 500/1 Hofner bass was launched at the 1956 Frankfurt Music Fair and subsequently rose to fame under a different name. In 1961 Paul McCartney bought his first Höfner bass in a music shop in Hamburg. This ‘Beatle Bass’ can be heard on many of the Beatles‘ most famous songs and a Hofner violin bass still accompanies Paul McCartney on stage and in the studio.

Today, Höfner continues to build historic high quality guitars and basses with old school craftsmanship and modern assembly techniques. New generations of players now appreciate Hofner hollow body and bass guitar quality and distinctive Hofner tone. Hofner has several lines to choose from. Popular lines include the German built reissue violin and club basses, Contemporary CT violin and club basses and Verythin guitars.

500/1 The Hofner 1962 Vintage Bass

Based on Paul McCartney’s 1962 Hofner Violin Bass, the ’62 bass has delighted Hofner aficionados by replicating details of the original. For example, the “strip” machine heads, the slot-head screws on the hardware, and the two-piece neck are authentic touches that connect this instrument to an earlier time. In the Vintage ’62 Höfner has created a replica of Paul’s bass historically accurate enough to satisfy even the most demanding Beatles fan.

Built to be as durable as its legacy, the compact-sized, easy-to-play, light-in-weight Vintage ’63 is equally at home on stage or in the studio.

Exact replica of the '63 model Violin Bass. The narrow neck and medium scale length of 30'' (76 cm) make for optimum playability. Also available in left-handed (L) version. Includes a Höfner bullet case.

The fretless version of the ´63 Hofner bass delivers just that warm, singing sound with plenty of sustain that many bass players have been waiting for.

5000/1 Deluxe Bass

Although they share a similar body shape, the Deluxe is a distinct departure from the Vintage ’63.
The Deluxe is a thoroughly exclusive instrument with a one-piece European maple neck, gold-plated hardware, and diamond-shaped mother-of-pearl headstock inlays. A dark, full-body binding that contrasts with the lighter woods surrounding it is one of the details that sets the Deluxe apart.

Responsive and light in weight, the Deluxe is truly a pleasure to play.
